GUANGZHOU, China — A new report reveals patent applications belonging to Huawei and a group of China-based artificial intelligence companies for systems that can detect people who are part of a Muslim minority group.

The ethnic Uighurs, who live mostly in China’s west, have been identified by the United Nations, United States, United Kingdom and others as a repressed group. Authorities allegedly use widespread surveillance technology to monitor the region’s Uighur population.

Alibaba Facial Recognition Tech Specifically Picks Out Uighur Minority, Report Shows | Voice of America

SHANGHAI – Technology giant Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. has facial recognition technology that can specifically pick out members of China’s Uighur minority, surveillance industry researcher IPVM said in a report. 

Alibaba itself said it was dismayed a unit developed software that can tag ethnicity in videos, and that the feature was never intended to be deployed to customers. 

The report comes as human rights groups accuse China of forcing more than 1 million Muslim Uighurs into labor camps in the region of Xinjiang and call out firms suspected of complicity.

New technology will let Denton police notify callers on call response, report status | News

You can already text 911 if you’re in the city of Denton and starting Monday, residents can receive texts with updates about reports they file.

The city’s technology services budget will make room for Spidr Tech, a company that designed technology for law enforcement agencies to send texts to the communities they serve. For Denton, that means providing 911 callers with text updates on their calls whether they called 911 for a crime or a stray dog.
