Ultraviolet light sterilizing technology introduced at Phoenix airport to kill coronavirus

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport added seven UV-C light sterilizers to some pre-security escalators to maximize the safety of travelers amid the coronavirus pandemic.

UV-C, or ultraviolet light, is known to kill up to 99.9% of bacteria and viruses and many other microorganisms, according to Sky Harbor officials.

The light was installed underneath the escalator handrail and is not visible to travelers, according to Gabriel Nevarez, deputy aviation director for Facilities and Services.

“They shine the UV light directly on the handrail as it passes through,” Nevarez said, “As the handrail is moving, it’s a continuous sanitation of the handrail.”

Notting Hill Carnival goers will face new security screening under plans put forward today by the Conservative London Mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey to tackle London’s knife crime epidemic. 

Mr Bailey said he would introduce “scan and search” technology for big events across the capital as a “non-invasive” alternative to conventional stop and search techniques. 

While police officers are making progress in tackling London’s violent crime, Mr Bailey, a former youth worker who acted as an advisor to David Cameron, said that Sadiq Khan’s strategy to tackle crime is failing.

How the world’s busiest airport envisions post-COVID travel

CHICAGO (Reuters) – With COVID-19 ravaging the aviation industry, airlines and airports worldwide are reining in costs and halting new spending, except in one area: reassuring pandemic-wary passengers about travel.

“Whatever the new normal (…) it’s going to be more and more around self-service,” Sean Donohue, chief executive of Dallas-Forth Worth International Airport (DFW), told Reuters in an interview.
